How OMNY Fare Capping Works
The MTA replaced the 7-Day Unlimited MetroCard with a rolling 7-day fare cap system via OMNY. Here are the exact rules:
- Rolling 7 Days: The 7-day period begins the moment you tap your first paid fare. It does not reset on Monday.
- Device Continuity: You must use the exact same device or card for every tap. If you use your physical Chase card on Monday and Apple Pay (tied to the same card) on Tuesday, they count as separate devices and will not aggregate toward the cap.
- Cost Ceiling: The cap is strictly $34.80 (which is exactly 12 rides at $2.90).
- Exclusions: Express buses and PATH trains do not count toward the NYCT subway/local bus fare cap.
Pro Tip: For couples or families, you cannot tap the same device multiple times in a row to reach the cap faster. Only the first tap at a station counts toward the cap; subsequent rapid taps will be charged the full $2.90 but will not accrue toward the 12-ride limit.
